THE LOWDOWN

SIMONA HALEP

30-year-old Simona Halep failed to win a WTA title last season to snap an eight-year streak from 2013-2020 in which she had claimed at least one. However, the former world number one did not take long to start another one by winning her first tournament of 2022 in Melbourne last week with a straight-sets victory over Veronika Kudermetova. Two-time Grand Slam champion Halep finished runner-up here to Caroline Wozniacki back in 2018.

MAGDALENA FRECH

24-year-old Magdalena Frech just about broke the top 100 last season with a career-high of 99th set in October. The Pole found some success on the ITF and Challenger circuits but her last tour-level victory came in the first round of the Courmayeur Open last Autumn. She is making her second Australian Open appearance having lost at this stage back in 2018.

THE PREDICTION

Simona Halep could surprise a lot of people this year in Melbourne as she makes her way back towards the top 10 and it should take a top player to oust her coming off a title win last week. The 30-year-old conceded just two games to Magdalena Frech in their quarter-final meeting at the Prague Open back in 2020 and while the Pole should be able to make more of a game of it here Halep should still be coming through in two.
