This looks a very tough call despite the gulf in ranking between world number 27 Shuai Zhang and number 103 Rebecca Peterson. 27-year-old Peterson recently found some serious form, seemingly from nowhere, to reach the final of the Merida Open as a qualifier before a three-set defeat to Camila Giorgi and the Swede backed that up on Wednesday by ousting Austin Open champion Marta Kostyuk in three. Meanwhile, 34-year-old Shuai Zhang takes a four-match losing streak into the second round at Indian Wells since failing to defend her Lyon Open title last month. The Chinese set a new career-high WTA world ranking of 22nd earlier this year after an incredible renaissance period and for the most part she has been beaten by top quality opponents in 2023 but back in-form Peterson, winner of their only tour-level encounter as well as at a Challenger last December, to earn at least a set as the likelier of two very capable winners.
