World number 26 Sebastian Korda needed five sets to beat qualifier Vit Kopriva on Monday as he continues to struggle with consistency on tour. The talented 23-year-old found the form of his career here last season, stunning Daniil Medvedev in the third round before an unfortunate injury saw him retire in the quarter-finals, but he has peaked and troughed ever since his return last spring. A run to the semi-finals of the Shanghai Masters last October is proof that the tennis is there but Korda may currently lack that cutting edge to win ugly in key moments after far too many avoidable defeats in recent months.
World number 110 Quentin Halys is a very solid hardcourt player, capable of much better tennis than his current ranking suggests. The 27-year-old came back from a set down to oust qualifier Lloyd Harris on Sunday and he made the third round at Wimbledon last summer to bring some useful Grand Slam experience into this first meeting with Korda. The American should be rolling through but expect a tiebreak or two in what could end up an intense four-hour match. Back Korda to win at least two sets as the likelier to come through and consider adding at least a tiebreak, with Halys’ serve tough to break.
