THE PREDICTION

This should be an excellent spectacle for clay-court enthusiasts as world number 19 Sebastian Baez takes on number 64 Dusan Lajovic in conditions that thoroughly suit both. 33-year-old Lajovic is far better than his deflated ranking suggests, particularly on his favoured clay, and he proved as much with a brilliant three-set victory over passionate Italian Lorenzo Sonego on Thursday. The Serb reached the semi-finals of the Barcelona Open last month, upsetting the likes of Ugo Humbert and Arthur Fils before just missing out in three sets to Monte-Carlo champion Stefanos Tsitsipas, and it would take a serious improvement by Baez’s recent performances to stop him here.

23-year-old Baez is a potent force when he finds some rhythm, winning back-to-back titles at Kitzbuhel and Winston-Salem last summer before repeating the feat in Rio and Santiago this February, but he has lost five of his last seven since to suggest Lajovic has the upper hand. The pair share a tight 1-1 head-to-head in which both meetings have seen sets go both ways on clay, so back Lajovic to earn at least one to leave the victor up to chance.
