THE PREDICTION

32-year-old Alison Riske-Armitraj put in some huge performances at the Canada Masters this week, beating Petra Kvitova and Jelena Ostapenko in three sets apiece, but she will be disappointed with a straight-sets exit to Yulia Putintseva in the round of 16. The American is a former Masters finalist after finishing runner-up to Aryna Sabalenka in Wuhan in 2019 and she will be well-backed as a popular home hopeful here in Cincinnati with some promise of a deep run in her recent results. 25-year-old Sara Sorribes Tormo lost to Sabalenka in straight sets in Toronto on Wednesday and she has struggled to match the level of players ranked above her ever since a strong run to the quarter-finals of the Madrid Open on her favoured clay. The Spaniard plays a fierce, regular ball that makes for some exciting rallies and three sets seem likely enough to pick as a one-off option between two scrappers. Otherwise, back Riske-Armitraj to win at least a set as the likelier of two capable victors.
