This should be an entertaining battle between two young home hopefuls aiming for a moment in the spotlight as fellow Americans Hailey Baptiste and Robin Montgomery both come through qualifying to make their second appearances at Indian Wells. 22-year-old Baptiste will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of 103rd after two impressive wins in qualifying, especially against former top 40 Clara Tauson, whilst 19-year-old Montgomery came back from a set down to beat Storm Hunter to the main draw. The pair met just two weeks ago at the Puerto Vallarta Challenger, where Baptiste came back from a set down to reach the semi-finals, and she leads their head-to-head 2-0 so far despite this being something of a clean slate in their first tour-level encounter.
