THE PREDICTION

World number 79 Rinky Hijikata beat an out-of-sorts Miomir Kecmanovic in straight sets on Tuesday to earn the sixth seed’s draw and he could enjoy a rare deep run this week in Los Cabos. The 22-year-old seems to have the right temperament for the challenging conditions here in Mexico and his run to the round of 16 at the US Open last summer if proof of what he can do on a hot hardcourt. World number 100 Aleksandar Kovacevic qualified handily this weekend before a consummate victory over Brandon Holt, giving the American some encouraging momentum. The 25-year-old impressed at the Australian Open last month, upsetting Auckland champion Alejandro Tabilo in five sets before a four-set exit to Karen Khachanov, but Hijikata’s run to the quarter-finals in Delray Beach last week suggest he has the edge on recent form. Back the Aussie to earn at least a set as the likelier of two capable victors.

TIP: RINKY HIJIKATA TO WIN A SET
