THE PREDICTION
World number two Rafael Nadal started last season as an injury doubt at Melbourne 1 before going on to stun the world with a 20-match winning streak that included a record-breaking 21st Grand Slam title at the Australian Open. The 36-year-old said goodbye to his long-term rival this year as Roger Federer retired at the Laver Cup and it cannot be much longer before the Spaniard follows suit as his genetic foot condition will never truly leave him in peace. Nadal will be eager to help Spain earn another international title under his guidance and Spain’s side looks one of the best in the tournament at this stage but, equally, he will not risk serious injury if the going gets tough against the likes of Cam Norrie with an Australian Open title to defend next month.
World number 14 Cam Norrie impressed in a run to the semi-finals of the Diriyah Exhibition this month and he looked in great shape in a straight-sets victory over Alex de Minaur on Thursday to help Team GB to a victory over hosts Australia. The Brit is yet to take a set from fellow left-hander Nadal in four defeats but it would not be a surprise if this is the first, so backing Nadal to earn at least a set looks the suitably cautious move here considering the way the Spaniard performed at the ATP Cup in November.
