THE PREDICTION

20-year-old Qinwen Zheng should set a new career-high WTA world ranking of around 21st after beating Caty McNally in straight sets on Friday. The Chinese rising star has impressed on all surfaces over the past 12 months but clay seems to be her most natural so far, with a brilliant run to the round of 16 at Roland-Garros last summer ended in three sets by eventual champion Iga Swiatek. It took Swiatek to knock the Zheng out of the Stuttgart Open last week and it should take a player ranked inside the top 20 at least to oust her here. World number 17 Ekaterina Alexandrova fits that requirement and she enjoyed a run to the semi-final here last season before defeat to eventual champion Ons Jabeur. The 28-year-old recently corrected some poor early form in 2023 with a strong run to the quarter-finals of the Miami Open and she impressed in Charleston on clay before losing to eventual runner-up Belinda Bencic. Alexandrova beat Zheng in three sets at Charleston last season in their only previous encounter and recent results suggest she is the slightest of favourites here. Back Alexandrova to earn at least a set and leave the victor up to chance in a match likely to go the distance.
