THE PREDICTION

World number 36 Bianca Andreescu burst onto the scene here in 2019 when at 18 years old she became the first wildcard to win the tournament in Women’s Singles and she went on to win the Canada Masters as well before her crowning achievement at the US Open. Andreescu set a career-high WTA world ranking of fourth after the feat but she has since struggled to stay on the tour altogether, missing the entirety of 2020, with a whole host of injuries and setbacks that continue to threaten her career to this day. Andreescu takes a three-match losing streak into the second round of Indian Wells to face another youngster at a similar stage to the Canadian’s 2019 in 21-year-old Peyton Stearns. The wildcard came back from a set down to beat Rebeka Masarova on Thursday, continuing strong form that saw her reach four ITF finals this season – going on to win two. Andreescu is the clear favourite to blast through this first meeting in two but the Canadian’s fitness and form are both questionable at the moment. Back her to win in two but leave this match out of an accumulator.
