THE PREDICTION
World number 30 Petra Martic received a bye to the second round at Indian Wells as the 25th seed here after some strong recent form, although she takes a two-match losing streak into this clash with Varvara Gracheva after finishing runner-up to Anastasia Potapova at the Linz Open. The 32-year-old beat Maria Sakkari in the Linz semi-finals last month to suggest her level is high right now but this looks a tough opener against Gracheva, who also finished runner-up recently to Marta Kostyuk at the Austin Open last week. 22-year-old Gracheva conceded just four games to Ysaline Bonaventure on Thursday after qualifying well in impressive circumstances considering her turnaround from the Austin final but she will have to figure out a way to beat Martic for the first time here as the Croat leads their head-to-head very convincingly, most recently winning in straight sets at the US Open last summer to 5-0 up. Gracheva has probably never been better equipped to get a point on the board than this match and her three wins this week give her a solid run-up. Back the Russian to earn at least a set, only her second against Martic, and leave the victor up to chance.
