THE PREDICTION

World number 33 Shelby Rogers just snuck into the Roland-Garros seeds despite a relatively poor season so far but the 30-year-old reached her first of two Grand Slam quarter-finals here in 2016 and she is always a dangerous draw at this level. Rogers was the last player to beat now-retired Ash Barty in a shock result at the US Open in 2021 but she has since failed to make it past the third round at a major tournament. World number 37 Petra Martic is another player full of peaks and troughs but the Croat is one of the better clay-courters on tour at her best. The 32-year-old stunned former Roland-Garros champion Barbora Krejcikova to reach the quarter-finals of the Madrid Open earlier this month and her best Grand Slam run also came here with a quarter-final exit in 2019. Martic leads their head-to-head record 2-1 after beating Rogers in the first round of Wimbledon last summer and she claimed their only clay meeting in three tight sets in Rome back in 2021. Back the Croat to earn at least a set as the likelier of two very capable victors.
