World number 195 Nadia Podoroska is far better than her current ranking suggests after missing more than a year from tour through injury but she was blasted off the court on Friday in a 6-2 6-0 defeat to Caroline Garcia. The 25-year-old set a career-high WTA world ranking of 36th back in 2021 after a stellar clay season at a similar time as Petra Martic was enjoying life on her favoured surface and the Croat got the better of Podoroska in their first meeting in a three-set victory at the Rome Masters, where she went on to finish runner-up to Iga Swiatek. 31-year-old Martic claimed the second WTA title of her career in 2022 at the Lausanne Open on clay but she also impressed with a run to the round of 16 at Wimbledon in a solid season. Podoroska should be the better for having a competitive match in her legs but back Martic to edge this one.
