THE PREDICTION

World number 11 Petra Kvitova’s form can fluctuate wildly these days but the two-time Wimbledon champion has impressed enough this season to be considered a serious threat to the top order in New York. The 33-year-old burst into form at the Miami Open in March to claim her 30th WTA title and she made it 31 with a near-perfect campaign at the Berlin 500 on her favoured grass in June to briefly break back inside the top 10. This looks a proper blockbuster, and a nostalgic one at that, between the former world number two and the returning former number one Caroline Wozniacki, who is just one title behind on 30 – including the 2018 Australian Open. The Dane, also 33, beat Tatiana Prozorova comfortably on Monday to make it 2-2 since returning from retirement and she has enjoyed by far the better runs of the two here in New York as a two-time runner-up in 2009 and 2014.

Kvitova leads Wozniacki 8-6 in a storied head-to-head record but 7-4 on hardcourts – with this their first encounter in New York and a first overall since Wozniacki beat the Czech at the WTA Finals in 2018. Leave this collector’s item of a match out of an accumulator but otherwise consider a one-off on Kvitova to win in three sets, with each of their two most recent matches seeing deciders.
