World number 67 Pavel Kotov finished runner-up to Gael Monfils at the Stockholm Open late last season but he has struggled to reach that promising level since on tour. The 25-year-old brings a three-match losing streak into the Miami Open as he looks to have struggled recalibrating from indoors hardcourts to the trickier outdoors variety but he remains the favourite on this surface in a first meeting with world number 80 Luca Van Assche. 19-year-old Van Assche was Roland-Garros junior champion in 2021 to set out his stall as a clear talent on clay but he enjoyed a run to the semi-finals of the Phoenix Challenger last week before a three-set exit to eventual champion Nuno Borges to suggest he is in a good moment in these conditions. Recent form says the Frenchman can find a way through here, as he eagerly aims to bring some momentum into the incoming clay swing, so back Van Assche to earn at least a set to leave this tough one up to chance.
