World number 10 Ons Jabeur won a lot of fans to her cause last season as an exceptionally talented, entertaining player on court. The 27-year-old finally won her first WTA title at the Birmingham Classic on grass and that form took her as far as the quarter-finals at Wimbledon. The Tunisian just missed out on becoming the first Arab to qualify for the WTA Finals but not without trying, with runs to the final of the Chicago Fall Tennis Classic and semi-finals of Indian Wells solid top 10 form. Jabeur retired from her quarter-final match against Anett Kontaveit on Thursday and it remains to be seen if that was anything more than a precaution.
NURIA PARRIZAS-DIAZ
Nuria Parrizas-Diaz set a new career high WTA world ranking of 64th this week after a run to the quarter-final of the Gippsland Trophy last week and she is set to better that come this first round clash with Ons Jabeur. The 30-year-old has been steadily improving year on year until a breakthrough season in 2021 where she enjoyed plenty of success on the ITF and Challenger circuits.
THE PREDICTION
This is tougher than it looks for Ons Jabeur if she is fit and able to take to court for a first meeting with Nuria Parrizas-Diaz. The 30-year-old Spaniard is in the form of her career and she will be fearless on her Australian Open debut, with her first round exit at the US Open last season her first and only Grand Slam appearance. Hold off on this match until Jabeur is confirmed to take to court but the Tunisian is made of stern stuff and likely to recover in time to play. At her best level this should be a straight-sets affair for the world number 10 but take Jabeur to win outright for precaution.
