THE LOWDOWN

World number seven Ons Jabeur won just one game in a hammering by Coco Gauff on Tuesday, confirming that all is not right in the Tunisian’s game right now. The 29-year-old was forced to pull out of the Zhengzhou Open through an injury concern three weeks ago and she has struggled to find her very best tennis ever since finishing runner-up to Marketa Vondrousova at Wimbledon this summer. Jabeur did manage to win the Ningbo Open in September, bringing her career total up to five, but it remains to be seen how she can compete in this otherwise enticing rematch.

World number six Marketa Vondrousova was competitive in the first set against Iga Swiatek on Monday before falling away quickly with a second-set bagel. The 24-year-old also comes into Cancun with some fitness concerns after playing just once since a quarter-final exit at the US Open in early September. Vondrousova has enjoyed her best, most consistent season on tour despite recent injury struggles through and her strong form in the spring burst into life at Wimbledon with her remarkable maiden Grand Slam title.

THE PREDICTION

This first meeting between Ons Jabeur and Marketa Vondrousova since the Wimbledon final should be a thrilling affair but it is unlikely that either will be able to bring their best to the occasion. Recent form and fitness issues looked stark in their opening matches against group favourites Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff and the loser of this match will almost certainly crash out of the WTA Finals with a match to spare. Vondrousova leads their tour-level head-to-head 3-2 but she has played so little tennis in recent months that Jabeur, who is underperforming but likely better-motivated by vengeance, looks the reasonable favourite to edge through. Back the Tunisian to earn at least a set, with all three of Vondrousova’s wins coming in her stronger period in the first half of the season.

BETTING TIP: Ons Jabeur to win a set.
