World number 45 Nuria Parrizas-Diaz reached the semi-finals of the Monterrey Open last week with some impressive displays against the likes of Heather Watson and Sara Sorribes Tormo. The 30-year-old has been improving steadily over the last few seasons, finding plenty of success on the ITF and Challenger circuits along the way, as something of a late bloomer on the WTA. She takes on world number 49 Shelby Rogers for a first time with the American likely to pull the majority of the support in California. 29-year-old Rogers set a career-high WTA world ranking of 36th as recently as January but she has lost four matches on the spin since a quarter-final defeat in Adelaide. Rogers reached the quarter-finals here back in October but whilst she has the experience and the support behind her taking Parrizas-Diaz to win at least a set here looks a shrewd move considering the Spaniard’s recent form.
