With only the fourth and final Grand Slam event of the year to play, the curtain is coming down on another momentous year of tennis. Novak Djokovic has only strengthened his claim as the greatest of all time, emerging victorious at the Australian and French Open, as well as narrowly losing out in an all-time classic Wimbledon final. However, by his standards, the world number two has not had the most success on the New York hard courts. Here are Djokovic’s 16 US Open appearances summed up by numbers.

Number of Titles Won

Those looking to bet on tennis perhaps won’t be too surprised to see Djokovic as the favourite to take home the US Open title. The Serbian has won six of the last nine Grand Slam events he has participated in, finishing as runner-up on two separate occasions. The major is expected to be another two-horse race, similar to Wimbledon. Outside of the world’s top two players, the tennis outright betting odds stretch to +1000 for number three Daniil Medvedev, and to a mammoth +3000 for Alexander Zverev.

Djokovic has won the US Open three times, tying it as his least successful major alongside the French Open. While he is used to being at the top of the pile in most Grand Slam events, Pete Sampras (5), Jimmy Connors (5), Roger Federer (5), John McEnroe (4), and Rafael Nadal (4) have all won more US Open titles than the Serb. And that’s not for lack of appearances. Djokovic has only missed two US Open tournaments since his Grand Slam career began in 2005. If he doesn’t lift the trophy at Flushing Meadows, it will be the only major he hasn’t won in the last five years, since victory over Juan Martin del Potro in 2018.

Number of Finals Lost

Djokovic has also lost more finals at the US Open than any other Grand Slam. Six times he has fallen at the final hurdle, compared to four lost finals at the French Open, two at Wimbledon, and none at the Australian Open. Twice he was beaten in the final by Rafael Nadal, with the other four defeats coming at the hands of Roger Federer, Andy Murray, Stan Wawrinka, and Daniil Medvedev.

Djokovic’s most recent final performance was in 2019 when he was beaten 3-0 by Medvedev, as the Russian lifted his first major title. And that’s not the only time a Djokovic US Open defeat has gifted his opponent a first major! The 2016 defeat to Wawrinka also allowed the Swiss star to lift his first major title.

Overall US Open Record

As for his overall record, Djokovic has won fewer matches at the US Open than any other major. He has played 95 matches, winning 82 and losing 13. His 86.3% win percentage is slightly better than his 85.7% at the French Open, but is considerably inferior to his record at Wimbledon (89.6%) and the Australian Open (92%).

His record at the US Open also includes the lowest tie-break win and first serve percentage of any major, as well as the highest double fault rate. While this data doesn’t exactly paint Djokovic in the best light, he is still the favourite to go on and lift the trophy – that’s just how good he is!
