World number one Novak Djokovic played his first match of the 2022 season amidst the ongoing furore surrounding his stance on the covid-19 vaccinations, beating in-form Lorenzo Musetti in straight sets. The 34-year-old’s previous match came in a semi-final defeat to Alexander Zverev at the ATP Finals last November, two weeks after winning the Paris Masters final in a vengeful victory over Daniil Medvedev – who ended his pursuit of the 2022 Calendar Slam at the US Open. World number 26 Karen Khachanov has been in good form over the last few months, with a semi-final defeat to eventual Qatar Open champion Roberto Bautista Agut last week following a solid win over Marin Cilic. The 25-year-old needed three sets to oust Alex de Minaur in the first round of the Dubai Open but he will be the better for it ahead of this intriguing clash.
Unsurprisingly, Novak Djokovic leads this head-to-head record 4-1 including a straight-sets victory in the quarter-finals here back in 2020. Khachanov famously won the best title of his career to date by defeating the Serb in straight sets at the Paris Masters in 2018, although Djokovic has won each of the three meetings since. With all five of their meetings settled in straight sets, taking Djokovic with a point to prove to come through in two looks the likely outcome. However, an outright pick remains the sensible option against a seasoned baseline battler like Khachanov.
