THE PREDICTION
World number five Novak Djokovic was put through his paces on Thursday by Quentin Halys but he will be the better for a tough straight-sets victory via two tiebreaks. The 35-year-old is riding a seven-match winning streak from his blistering campaign at the ATP Finals last November, where he tied Roger Federer’s record of six year-end trophies, and he will be totally focused on maintaining that momentum as he gears up for a return to the Australian Open as the record holder there. World number 18 Denis Shapovalov beat Roman Safiullin in straight sets to improve on a shaky start in Adelaide but whilst the Canadian will be pumped and ready for the fight here he faces a foreboding 7-0 deficit in his head-to-head record with Djokovic. The pair have not met since an entertaining semi-final at Wimbledon in 2021 but this could come closer than first appears considering Djokovic’s tussle with Halys. Shapovalov has taken just two sets from the Serb in seven meetings, though, so backing Djokovic to win in two seems a reasonable call.
