THE PREDICTION
This could be a thrilling fourth encounter between good friends off the court. World number three Novak Djokovic beat Marton Fucsovics in straight sets on Wednesday night but the first set went north of 80 minutes before the Serb reigned in his exhausted opponent. Djokovic is still far from the finished article on clay but he has won each of his last 16 Grand Slam matches since losing to Rafael Nadal in the quarter-finals here last summer and he will only improve as the rounds progress. World number 34 Alejandro Davidovich Fokina has played very well to oust back-to-back French rising stars in Arthur Fils and Luca Van Assche. The 23-year-old reached the quarter-finals here two years ago before defeat to Alexander Zverev and he finished runner-up at the Monte-Carlo Masters last spring after stunning Djokovic in the second round.
36-year-old Djokovic often starts the clay season poorly, by his standards, though and he knows where to hurt the Spaniard over five sets. The Serb leads 2-1 in their head-to-head record but it would not be a surprise, at all, to see Davidovich Fokina take the first set here before Djokovic reels him in. Consider a one-off on the Spaniard to take the first set but otherwise back Djokovic to win outright.
