THE PREDICTION
Former world number one Naomi Osaka picked up her maiden WTA title here at Indian Wells in 2018 before going on to win her first Grand Slam title at the US Open. The 26-year-old’s most recent of seven career titles was the Australian Open in 2021, one of four major crowns overall, but recent seasons have seen her struggle with both mental and physical health before taking some time away form the sport to have her first child, Shai, last year. Osaka’s return from maternity leave has taken very little time at all after a superb run to the quarter-finals of the Qatar Masters last month saw her confidently withdraw from Dubai the following week – a move that heavily suggests she feels she can be a serious factor across the Sunshine Double this month.
This will be the first tournament she plays with her daughter in the vicinity and that should be a powerful motivator for Osaka, who clearly needed the clarity and perspective she has found to make tennis matter again. Former number five Sara Errani has enjoyed some intriguing form in recent months but the veteran has drawn perhaps the shortest straw in the desert this fortnight. Back Osaka to blast through in straight sets.
