THE PREDICTION
Former world number one Naomi Osaka overcame a teenage Marta Kostyuk in three tight sets in the second round of the US Open in 2020, en-route to her second US Open title. The pair meet for a second time in vastly different circumstances here in Rome as Osaka brings a ranking of 173rd, as she continues her comeback from hiatus, to meet 21-year-old Kostyuk at a career-high of 20th. 26-year-old Osaka beat Clara Burel in straight sets on Wednesday to look solid on her weakest surface but this should be a much tougher test against the Ukrainian, who found her feet on clay at the Stuttgart Open to finish runner-up to Elena Rybakina last month.
Kostyuk recently reached three-successive semi-finals on tour, and two finals including San Diego, until an early exit in Madrid last time out but she should be able to bounce back well here as a player who often finds her best against the best. Conditions better-suit Kostyuk than Osaka but three sets seem likelier than two here, so take Kostyuk to earn at least one to leave the victor up to chance.
