THE PREDICTION

Former world number one Venus Williams won her most recent of 49 WTA titles in Kaohsiung back in 2016 but she remains a threat on her day at 43 years young. The seven-time Grand Slam champion will be backed to the hilt by an adoring home crowd at Indian Wells who will be desperate to make up for the wrongs that saw the Williams sisters boycott this tournament for 14 years and both the support and desire to avenge will be strong motivation. World number 80 Nao Hibino has to be the favourite here 14 years Williams’ junior but the Japanese dropped sets in both of her qualifying rounds to suggest this first meeting between the two can go to three. Hibino impressed in Dubai last time out too, beating Magda Linette in three sets before losing to sixth-seed Qinwen Zheng in as close a contest, so backing the 29-year-old to win outright is the uninspired, sensible move.

TIP: NAO HIBINO TO WIN
