22-year-old Matteo Arnaldi’s rapid transformation on hardcourts continues, in a not dissimilar way to Holger Rune’s explosion last season, with a three-set victory over Jan-Lennard Struff on Saturday. The Italian has spent much of the season enjoying eye-catching results on clay to find himself pigeon-holed as a clay-court specialist but, like Rune, he has suddenly burst into life on hardcourts with a recent run to the round of 16 at the US Open last month featuring a shock win over Cam Norrie. World number 51 J.J. Wolf also beat an admittedly out of sorts Norrie in three sets on Saturday, either side of a rain delay, to claim back-to-back wins on tour for the first time since making the semi-finals of the Atlanta Open in July. The 24-year-old burst into the form of his life this time last season before falling away after a huge run to the round of 16 at the Australian Open in January and it will be interesting to see how he fares with confidence boosted. Arnaldi beat Wolf in straight sets in the first round of the China Open last week but this should come a lot closer. Back the Italian to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
