World number 21 Francisco Cerundolo overcame a tough assault by Mackenzie McDonald in two tiebreaks on Friday to get a strong foothold in at his Shanghai Masters debut. The 25-year-old has enjoyed two excellent runs at the Miami Masters, to the semi-finals last season and the quarters this year, to prove himself a serious threat to the early rounds here in Shanghai but he has struggled to find his best tennis since returning to hardcourts after a career-best summer on clay and grass. World number 57 Marton Fucsovics became the latest player to upset an out of sorts Felix Auger-Aliassime in a tight three setter on Friday, backing up a solid start against qualifier Denis Yevseyev. The 31-year-old has looked close to his best in parts of this season but his form has been erratic at best with few strong results strung together. That makes taking Cerundolo to edge through this first encounter feel a reasonable risk.
