20-year-old Florida native Martin Damm was handed a wildcard at the Miami Open to make his ATP tour debut on a huge stage and he will be backed to the hilt as a severe home underdog on Wednesday. World number 49 Zhizhen Zhang has arguably underperformed so far this season following his excellent breakthrough in 2023 but the Chinese number one has needed some serious beating to exit tournaments, taking sets against the likes of Ugo Humbert, Andrey Rublev and Gael Monfils to suggest his best tennis is simmering under the surface. A three-set exit to lucky loser Luca Nardi last time out at Indian Wells could be construed as a lack of experience at this level but he should be able to avoid another upset here with a comfortable win.
