Back in Serie A, it has been a tough start to the season for Monza as they now welcome Cagliari to Stadio Brianteo in Lombardy on Sunday.

Monza preview: Tough start

Following their promotion the top-flight last season, Monza begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting just outside of the bottom three and the relegation places with one victory in their six matches so far this season.

The hosts returned from the international break with a 3-1 defeat to Lazio at Stadio Olimpico in a game in which they went 2-0 and a man down before fighting back and then conceding late on again via Andrea Pinamonti.

Cagliari preview: Strong Sardinians

Still under the management of young coach Fabio Pisacane, Cagliari have been one of the surprise packages in Serie A this season with the Sardinians winning four of their opening six games of the campaign.

Cagliari head to Monza on the back of another strong performance as they shared a 1-1 draw with Juventus at the Unipol Demus last week, with Daniel Maldini putting Cagliari ahead before Randal Kolo Muani’s 81st minute equaliser.

Monza team news: Fresh issues

Lorenzo Lucchesi is now missing through suspension for Monza this week with fresh attacking injury issues including Omari Forson and Patrick Ciurria.

Predicted XI (3-4-3): Tornqvist; Kouadio, Goglichidze, Carboni; Birindelli, Folorunsho, Akinsanmiro, Mangas; Ngonge, Varela, Zeballos

Unavailable: Lucchesi (Suspended)

Questionable: Ziolkowski (Fitness), Toure (Fitness), Pessina (Fitness), Ciurria (Injured), Forson (Injured)

Cagliari team news: Nothing new

There are no fresh injuries for this one as Yael Trepy is a doubt as he works his way back, while both Mattia Felici and Riyad Idrissi continue to deal with knee injuries.

Predicted XI (4-1-2-1-2): Caprile; Ze Pedro, Yerry Mina, Juan Rodriguez, Obert; Winks; Romano, Massolin; Adopo; Maldini, Mendy

Unavailable: Felici (Injured), Idrissi (Injured)

Questionable: Trepy (Fitness)

Monza vs Cagliari prediction

Monza have been competitive, despite the record of their results, since they returned to the top-flight. The hosts, with their home advantage, will again believe they can get at Cagliari – having scored in all six of their matches thus far. Cagliari, though, have only lost to Internazionale and only not won another game against Juve and look very good at the moment, albeit with caution and a conservative style, so a low-scoring contest remains likelier even with Monza’s attacking capabilities.

Monza vs Cagliari tip: Under 2.5 goals
