THE LOWDOWN

MARIN CILIC

World number 24 Marin Cilic is coming off a two-match losing streak after a disappointing defeat to Jiri Vesely at the Dubai Tennis Championships last month. The 33-year-old beat Andrey Rublev in the third round of the Australian Open before losing to Felix Auger-Aliassime for a strong start to the season that reflects a renaissance last year in which he won his 19th and 20th titles at the Stuttgart Open and St. Petersburg Open.

MIOMIR KECMANOVIC

World number 61 Miomir Kecmanovic overcame a strong challenge from Liam Broady in the first round of Indian Wells on Friday but he has some way to go to emulate his best showing here after reaching the quarter-finals in 2019. The 22-year-old reached the round of 16 at the Australian Open this season in some promising signs of form after a terrible 2021.

THE PREDICTION

World number 24 Marin Cilic won the US Open in 2014 but he also owns a Masters title from the Cincinnati Open two years later to show for some near-misses at this level across his illustrious career. The Croat looks set to be too big of a test for Miomir Kecmanovic in their first ever meeting as the Serb continues to struggle for consistency on tour, with a three-set victory over Liam Broady suggesting he will come off the worse here. Back Cilic to win outright.
