World number seven Maria Sakkari finished runner-up to Iga Swiatek here last season, one of two Masters finals she lost in 2022 after more recently coming second to Jessica Pegula in Guadalajara last October. The Greek beat Pegula, Aryna Sabalenka and Ons Jabeur at the WTA Finals before losing her first knock-out match against eventual champion Caroline Garcia to finish off last season and that pretty much sums up her plight right now with two further semi-final exits this year. With some pressure here as a former finalist, Sakkari could end up in a real scrap against world number 41 Shelby Rogers. The 30-year-old beat Katie Volynets in three sets on Wednesday to get a useful match in her legs and she has yet to lose to Sakkari in three previous meetings, her most recent coming in impressive fashion at the San Jose Open last October. Sakkari should be winning this match in straight sets at her best and yet it would be no surprise at all to see her fall at the first hurdle here. Back Rogers to win at least a set and leave the victor up to chance.
