World number six Maria Sakkari received a bye to the second round of the China Open as the sixth seed here and it will be fascinating to see how she fares after finally winning her second WTA title at the Guadalajara Masters last month. The 28-year-old made it seven wins on the spin before defeat to Jessica Pegula in the semi-finals of the Tokyo Open on Saturday but she should be able to bounce back here, still feeding off of the emotional release of exorcising her demons in Guadalajara. World number 98 Linda Fruhvirtova is much better than her current WTA ranking suggests and she looks like picking up again after a poor summer. The 18-year-old is a clear star in the making after reaching the round of 16 at the Australian Open in January and a run to the semi-finals of the Ningbo Open last week saw her bring imperious form into a one-sided win over Arantxa Rus here on Sunday. Sakkari should be blasting through this match in straight sets all the same but take the Greek to win outright for caution’s sake.
