World number six Maria Sakkari ended 2022 as one of the most in form players on the WTA tour, finishing runner-up to Jessica Pegula at the Guadalajara Masters before beating the American, Aryna Sabalenka and Ons Jabeur en-route to the semi-finals of the WTA Finals. The 27-year-old got her new season underway well with a straight-sets victory over Viktoria Tomova on Friday and then partnered fellow top ten star Stefanos Tsitsipas in a joyous Mixed Doubles match with Bulgaria to end up 4-1 winners and lay out Greece’s stall as a genuine title contender. It was almost the opposite story for Elise Mertens and Belgium, though, after the world number 29 scraped past Bulgaria’s Gergana Topalova and then lost out in the Mixed Doubles as part of an initially promising duo alongside David Goffin.
