World number eight Maria Sakkari enjoyed a straight-sets victory over Nao Hibino on Sunday for a rare stress-free start to a Grand Slam. The 28-year-old lost in the first round at Roland-Garros, Wimbledon and the US Open last summer with a concerning mental block that looked set to scupper her promising career but she finally broke her title duck with victory at the Guadalajara Masters in September to inject some much-needed confidence. Sakkari reached the semi-finals in Paris and New York back in 2021, losing to eventual champions Barbora Krejcikova and Emma Raducanu, respectively, to prove her potential at this level but it remains to be seen how she fares in the coming rounds in Melbourne.
World number 74 Elina Avanesyan came back from a set down to Zhuoxuan Bai on Sunday, bringing some battling momentum into the second round, and she will be well aware of Sakkari’s psyche ahead of their first encounter on tour.
