World number three Coco Gauff is now the proud owner of the longest winning streak of the season on the WTA tour after overcoming a stern test by Veronika Kudermetova to go 15 unbeaten. The 19-year-old burst into this transformative form at the start of the hardcourt swing to win her first WTA 500 title in Washington, beating Maria Sakkari in the final, and after a blip in Montreal she claimed even bigger milestones with a first Masters title in Cincinnati leading on to a maiden Grand Slam title at the US Open. A three-set scare against Petra Martic here on Tuesday only looks to have helped her resolve but world number six Sakkari will be eager to prove herself too in this rematch as she also comes in with recent firsts after a maiden Masters title claimed in Guadalajara late last month.
The 28-year-old needed three sets to oust home hopeful Xinyu Wang on Thursday but she should be wholly more competitive than their Washington final with years of pressure off of her back. Sakkari leads their head-to-head 4-2 but Gauff’s win in August was their first meeting since May last year. Back Gauff to edge this likely thriller outright.
