THE PREDICTION

Former world number 22 Shuai Zhang set a new WTA record for the longest losing streak on tour with her defeat to Karolina Pliskova in Cluj-Napoca last month, falling in straight sets to the eventual champion to make it 18 matches without a win. The 35-year-old’s struggles are all the more fascinating considering she enjoyed an excellent 2022, winning her third WTA title in Lyon before a run to the round of 16 at the US Open, but it is currently difficult to see where her salvation will come from. 24-year-old Mai Hontama will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of 110th after qualifying well this week to bring some momentum into only her second ever Masters campaign and she will be well aware of her opponents’ current shortcomings. Shuai Zhang won a doubles match in Austin last week to at least get the taste for it back but back Hontama to build on her strong qualifying campaign to win outright here.

TIP: MAI HONTAMA TO WIN
