THE PREDICTION

This looks a tough match to call between in-form Jaqueline Cristian, who qualified well this week with a three-set win over Daria Saville, and world number 52 Magdalena Frech, whose form seems to have departed for now. 26-year-old Frech reached the round of 16 at the Australian Open in January, building on improving tennis from last summer, and she matched that effort with an excellent run to the last 16 at the Dubai Masters in February before a three-set exit to Elena Rybakina seemed to knock the stuffing out of her. The Pole’s five defeats on the spin certainly opens the door for Cristian, who stunned Madison Keys and Emma Navarro en-route to the quarter-finals in Charleston last time out, but the Romanian has rarely shown consistency so far in her career. A three-set exit to Daria Kasatkina in Charleston says Cristian could make a real dent this fortnight but back her to earn at least a set here to see how she fares early on.

TIP: JAQUELINE CRISTIAN TO WIN A SET
