THE PREDICTION
World number 77 Emma Raducanu overcame injury doubts and illness to beat Danka Kovinic in convincing fashion on Thursday, ousting the Montenegrin in straight sets to avenge her Australian Open exit last season. The 20-year-old still has little-to-no assurances that her body will hold up round after round but when everything falls into place she still has the same quality that saw her produce one of tennis’ most famous moments two years ago when she became the first qualifier to win the US Open in the Open Era. One of Raducanu’s best runs last season came at the Korea Open when she beat Magda Linette in straight sets to reach the semi-finals but since then 31-year-old Linette has set a new career-high WTA world ranking of 21st for reaching the semi-finals of the Australian Open with a remarkable upturn in form. The Pole struggled to make ground in her first two tournaments as a top seed at the Merida Open and Austin Open in recent weeks but with that pressure off at Indian Wells she should improve.
Leave Raducanu’s matches out of accumulators for the foreseeable future but consider backing her to edge this second meeting with Linette with the support of a partisan crowd behind her.
