THE PREDICTION
32-year-old Magda Linette moved back up to world number 48 after finishing runner-up to Sloane Stephens at the Rouen Open last weekend, with victories over Arantxa Rus and Anhelina Kalinina particularly impressive in these conditions. The Pole was competitive against Stephens in a three-set defeat to suggest she can take the positives from a third final lost on the spin but Elisabetta Cocciaretto is a tough opening draw here in Madrid. The world number 54 has needed the likes of Victoria Azarenka and Caroline Garcia to oust her from her last two tournaments on clay but she claimed the Charleston Challenger on her favoured surface this time last month to start the swing well. Back Linette to earn a least a set on last week’s form but this is one of the tougher calls of the day, with Cocciaretto well capable of starting fast.
