28-year-old Mackenzie McDonald came into the Shanghai Masters at a career-high ATP world ranking of 38th off the back of his best, most consistent season on tour. The American beat Corentin Moutet in straight sets to maintain his recent level at Masters tournaments, with runs to the quarter-finals in Toronto and round of 16 in Cincinnati seeing top 10 wins over Andrey Rublev and Holger Rune. World number 21 Francisco Cerundolo set his career-high ATP world ranking of 19th after winning his second ATP title at the Eastbourne International in June, where he came back from a set down to ruin McDonald’s great run in the semi-finals. The 25-year-old has struggled a little since the start of the hardcourt swing, particularly after failing to defend his maiden ATP title on clay at the Bastad Open in late July, but a victory over Alejandro Davidovich Fokina at the Laver Cup two weeks ago was an encouraging one.
