THE PREDICTION
This should be a thrilling encounter between two of the breakthrough stars on clay this season as 23-year-old Mariano Navone takes on 22-year-old Luciano Darderi. Navone is the higher-ranked of the two despite Darderi claiming a maiden ATP title at the Cordoba Open in February in only his third tour-level campaign and he will be backed to the hilt on a raucous Grand Stand Arena as one of a cavalry of up-and-coming Italians on tour.
Argentina’s Navone, however, brings the far higher career-high ranking of 31st (to Darderi’s 54th) after finishing runner-up at the prestigious Rio 500, Chile Open and more recently the Bucharest Open, where he beat Darderi in straight sets in the first round. The pair also faced off in the semi-finals of the Cagliari Challenger last week with Navone coming out on top in straight sets en-route to the title there but do not underestimate what playing in Rome will do for the Italian’s level, with Darderi claiming their first clash this season at the Buenos Aires Open in February.
Darderi came back from a set down to stun former number 10 Denis Shapovalov on Wednesday and he should thrive in this bear-pit atmosphere to perform much better than last week in this rematch with Navone. Back the Italian to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
TIP: LUCIANO DARDERI TO WIN A SET
