World number 40 Matteo Arnaldi stunned Taylor Fritz in three sets last week at the Mexican Open before a thrilling exit in just as tight circumstances to Ben Shelton. 23-year-old Arnaldi produced a stunning run to the round of 16 at the US Open last summer to prove himself a serious up-and-comer on tour and he ended 2023 as Davis Cup Champion alongside Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Sonego to cap off a brilliant breakthrough year. World number 86 Luca Van Assche’s 2023 was supposed to fall in a similar way, at least on his favoured clay, but the 19-year-old has plenty of time to improve on what was occasionally an encouraging debut season. The Frenchman reached the third round of the Australian Open to prove himself one to watch in his own right but the conditions here in Indian Wells certainly favour in-form Arnaldi’s entertaining game.
