THE PREDICTION

30-year-old Marco Cecchinato set a career-high ATP world ranking of 16th in 2019 after reaching the semi-finals of Roland-Garros the summer before, famously upsetting Novak Djokovic in the quarter-finals before defeat to Dominic Thiem. The Italian has won in the first round here in each of his last three appearances but this will be a serious challenge against up-and-coming Luca Van Assche, who won the Boys Singles title here two years ago. The 19-year-old has won two Challenger titles this season as well as taken a couple of tour-level wins on clay at the Estoril Open and Banja Luka Open as he continues to steadily climb the rankings, with a career-high of 79th set earlier this month. Youth versus experience should make for a thrilling match here but whilst home advantage should bolster the teenager, Cecchinato has grabbed some strong results in recent weeks to look solid enough to come through. Back the Italian to win outright here with sets likely to go both ways.
