THE PREDICTION
World number 28 Lorenzo Musetti brought a poor five-match losing streak into 2024 after falling away drastically towards the end of last season but he made it 3-2 for the year with a four-set victory over Benjamin Bonzi on Monday to look like improving. The 21-year-old may never find his best tennis in these conditions as one of the more naturally gifted clay-courters on tour but he faces another youngster who favours the slower surface in what is a big opportunity for both. World number 79 Luca Van Assche needed five sets to overcome home hopeful James Duckworth on Monday but that is a hugely impressive result for the 19-year-old after struggling at the majors last year. Van Assche reached the semi-finals of the Next Gen ATP Finals late last season, losing in four sets to both eventual finalists, to look ready for more progress in 2024 but Musetti should have the hardcourt experience to edge through here. Sets should go both ways but back Musetti to thrive on some returning confidence.
