THE PREDICTION
World number 15 Liudmila Samsonova is one of the streakier players on tour, and certainly within the top 30, but at her best she is a top 10 talent on hardcourts with a powerful game that can thrive in these conditions. The 25-year-old brings a two-match losing streak into Miami, and an underwhelming 4-7 record for 2024 so far, but she has also been unfortunate to draw the likes of Naomi Osaka, Marketa Vondrousova and Leylah Fernandez in recent weeks to offer very little chance of some momentum.
World number 68 Yulia Putintseva overcame Cristina Bucsa in three sets on Tuesday to build on her excellent run to the round of 16 at Indian Wells last week, where she upset Madison Keys and Ekaterina Alexandrova before defeat to eventual champion Iga Swiatek, but the Kazakh is a tough player to back with full confidence as a highly intermittent performer. 29-year-old Putintseva is capable of far better tennis than her current ranking suggests but back Samsonova to awaken from her slumber to win at least a set as the just-about likelier victor.
TIP: LIUDMILA SAMSONOVA TO WIN A SET
