The 24-year-old is at her best on hardcourts, with two recent runners-up places at Masters events in Montreal and Beijing to prove it, and her mentality in key moments is one of her biggest strengths. World number 16 Veronika Kudermetova won the Tokyo Open last month, usurping Samsonova as the champion, but she has struggled to match that level since. A straight-sets defeat to Lin Zhu in the opening match of this group on Tuesday set the tone for her WTA Elite Trophy chances but the elder Russian can be almost unplayable at her rare best. Samsonova beat Kudermetova in straight sets in the quarter-finals of the Abu Dhabi Open back in February to level their head-to-head at 2-2 and she can be backed to edge this fifth encounter.
