THE PREDICTION
This looks a p[roper thriller on Sunday as in-form Belinda Bencic faces a 0-3 deficit in a head-to-head record with Liudmila Samsonova. World number nine Bencic has only lost to Aryna Sabalenka this season, winning Adelaide 2 before defeat to the eventual Australian Open champion in the round of 16 at Melbourne, and she has enjoyed a spotless run to the final here with a particularly impressive performance in two sets over Beatriz Haddad-Maia on Saturday, who knocked out pre-tournament favourite Elena Rybakina. 24-year-old Samsonova overcame red-hot Qinwen Zheng on Saturday as one of three brilliant results this week and the Russian has, remarkably, never lost a final on tour with this her fifth since the summer of 2021, where she beat Bencic in the Berlin Open to win her first of four titles. That sort of clutch record is hard to look past but it is true that Bencic is playing with a freedom and confidence that we have not seen for some time. The sensible option looks to be backing the Russian to win at least a set as the likelier of two very capable champions.
