THE PREDICTION
World number two Aryna Sabalenka beat Petra Martic in straight sets on Wednesday to get her Canada Masters campaign underway well. The 25-year-old won her maiden Grand Slam title at the Australian Open back in January with a huge performance against Elena Rybakina and she will be pleased to be back on her favoured surface for the remainder of the season. Sabalenka could well end up world number one for the first time at the end of this season if she can out perform Iga Swiatek over the coming months and performing well here and in Cincinnati next week is crucial to that end. World number 18 Liudmila Samsonova beat rival Qinwen Zheng in straight sets to improve on her comeback over Katerina Siniakova on Tuesday. The 24-year-old won three of her four WTA titles in the space of three months this time last season and if she can find that sort of level she can reach new heights this time around.
A run to the semi-finals of the Washington Open, as defending champion, was ended by Coco Gauff in straight sets last week and Sabalenka should be an even tougher test in these conditions. Samsonova stunned Sabalenka at the Guadalajara Masters late last season in three sets but Sabalenka earned revenge in two tiebreaks en-route to her Adelaide 500 title in January this year. Back the Belarussian to beat the Russian outright inside an accumulator or in straight sets on its own.
