World number nine Ons Jabeur is still some way from her bets level on tour but a three-set victory over solid clay specialist Camila Osorio was a good win on Wednesday.
The 29-year-old is a popular fans’ favourite practically everywhere she goes, unless playing a home hopeful, but neutrals will be split in their support here as former number 13 Leylah Fernandez is also one of the more universally popular draws in tennis – notorious for the never-say-die grit that saw her reached the US Open final in 2021.
Jabeur overcame the Canadian in three sets on clay only recently at the Madrid Open to take a 3-0 lead in their head-to-head but all three of those meetings, on a surface each, have required deciders.
21-year-old Fernandez reached the quarter-finals here in 2022 and she has yet to drop a set this week to further prove her credentials at this tournament. The sensible way to avoid a result is backing Jabeur to win at least a set as the likelier of two very capable victors.
