In-form Laura Siegemund stunned 17th seed Ekaterina Alexandrova in three tight sets on Monday, ousting the tough Russian 11-9 in the deciding tiebreak. 35-year-old Siegemund has enjoyed an excellent past 12 months of renaissance form on tour in both singles and doubles but she enjoyed a huge injection of confidence two weeks ago when she was subbed in to Germany’s doubles pair, alongside Alexander Zverev, to win three knock-out deciders on the spin. Germany ousted hosts Australia 15-13 in the deciding tiebreak of their semi-final clash in Sydney and that will add some extra needle to this potential thriller on Wednesday as Storm Hunter looks for vengeance.
THE PREDICTION
The 29-year-old is doubles number one after an excellent 2023 alongside Elise Mertens and she looks a serious title challenger in Women’s Doubles this fortnight alongside defending champion Katerina Siniakova. However, the singles world number 180 claimed the first Australian Open win of her career on Monday with a straight-sets result over Sara Errani that will spur her – and a raucous home support – on to want more in this side of the draw. Siegemund is well-versed with playing the villain of the piece as a wily singles player and she remains the favourite having won all eight of the matches in which she has featured so far in 2024. Back the German to win outright, with three sets about as likely as two.
